Serious answer:  it was an enormously more optimistic and prosperous time.  Many films and television programs of the era reflect this.  The US had a President who did not hold his own nation in obvious contempt, nor hate the people he was elected to represent.  Or if he did, he hid it better than anyone who followed.  Also niggers and queers didn't have quite so many special rights and extralegal privileges as they do now.  Before camcorders and bodycams the police were allowed to put boot to ass to maintain safety and order, which didn't always work well, but the advent of camcorders meant that the cops are no longer allowed to give Rastus a tune-up, and that made everything much worse.  The government didn't burn down churches and burn White women and children alive in front of news cameras back then. The nation hadn't been as fully colonized by hyperviolent foreign IQ-55 brownoids and the levels of social trust and social capital were far higher.  I'd go back to 1982 in an instant, no hesitation, though I'd hope to arrange to make the same journey again after about a decade.

The more sporty models of the era evoke the sense of optimism from the era. If one's mental headspace is situated in the 80s, the advancement in cars seen at the time was, in the human psyche, greater than that achieved in the past 3 decades. Fuel injection, catalytic conversion, turbocharging, ABS, OBD, all made possible by cheapening semiconductors. And computers had yet to become The Great Satan yet. There were desirous reasons to want to avoid them at the time.
